“Circle of Raphael” amulet ad banned

By | August 19, 2010 | Print This Post | E-mail This Post | 4 Comments

Circle of Raphael AmuletAn amulet advertised by the Circle of Raphael has been banned after a reader “challenged the claims and said he wanted proof that the amulet worked”.

The ad for the amulet promised its bearer would be “blessed with the gift of Angelic good fortune, guidance and divine protection from all real danger, both physical and spiritual”, in addition to a number of other claims. (See the full article on the Telegraph.co.uk: “Amulet advert banned over claim of ‘divine protection“.

The Telegraph.co.uk pokes fun at these guys, and not without reason. The “talisman” is small – “the size of a 10p piece and which features an array of mystic symbols” – and expensive – “silver for £29 or nine carat gold for £120″.

On their website the CoR describe themselves as “the recognized world leaders in the ancient art of true talismanic magic”. I’m no expert, but I try to keep familiarity groups who become known, but prior to the rather amusing article that ran on Telegraph.co.uk yesterday, I never knew they existed. “World leaders”? Anyone else heard of these guys?

They elaborate that they are “a small group of genuine Adepts who feel that the ancient wisdoms are the birthright of all humankind, and as such should be made easily accessible to all” – same schtick many esoteric orders go for, but these guys also have a sister group “created and empowered by the same Master Adept” called The Enlightened Path. So what’s the difference?

The Enlightened Path’s talismans are based on the ancient Hebrew magical system and spiritual philosophy known as the Cabbala or, as some call it, the Kabbala. The talismans from the Circle of Raphael, are based on the ancient Qabalah magical system which is a powerful combination of both ancient Hebrew Cabbala magic and early Christian Qabalah Western Magic.

Sure. Ok.

Except there are no details about the group itself whatsoever. This “Circle”, if there is one, seems to be composed of cheesy web designers and salesmen. So it goes.

It’s disappointing that these kind of things gain traction at all – that desperate people actually turn to companies (let’s drop the pretence that there’s actually a “Circle”) like this to avoid facing their problems.

Also… Did you see the picture of the actual amulet?

That’s a big ask for a few Hebrew letters. They could have at least tried to sigil it up.

This interests me from a professional standpoint. It’s bad advertising. You can’t say things like that about washing powder so you can’t say them about an amulet… Whether or not there is any efficacy at all behind its production.

And no, I haven’t heard of them either. Enterprising little cult, aren’t they?

      Not terribly inspiring, is it?

I’m all for charging for one’s work, yay capitalism and all that, but this seems more than a little off.

A part of it has to do with the fact that mass marking holy objects seems more than a little crass.

Glad to hear it’s worked for you, though!
