Andrieh Vitimus, Toronto Does Magic 2010This October Andrieh Vitimus is back for Toronto Does Magic 2010, a series of courses from Friday 15th, to Sunday 17th.

The courses will be held at the Naka Ima Dojo on 171 East Liberty St. Unit, #116 in Toronto’s Liberty Village.

Friday’s classes will focus on chaos magick, NLP and Andrieh’s experience as an exorcist, magickian and Vodou priest, Saturday will consist of an all day boot-camp, culminating in a brunch and book signing on Sunday and a Real World Boot Camp Practicum.

Classes range from donations to 165$Cdn for the boot-camp if purchased separately, but if you pre-pay by August 31st you can attend all six events for 175$Cdn. On-site the complete package will cost 205$Cdn.

Last year I had the pleasure of being Andrieh’s guest at L’Heure Noir in Hamilton, and can attest to his skills as an speaker – he knows his stuff, and as the last event was such a blast, I’m sure this one will be as well.

Psyche in front of the Houses of ParlimentHello again, my dears!

Big thanks to Cole Tucker for manning the fort while I was away. In Locusts and Wild Honey he shared a bit of his background,  in Meet the Baptists he introduced two British chaotes and their website, and interviewed them in Words of the Magi, also contributing a guest Saturday Signal. Thanks again for your help!

Additional thanks to Anton Channing for his piece, Psyche Magic Revisited, an expanded excerpt from his book Kaos Hieroglyphica.

I’m back, and I’d like to say I’m well rested, but honestly I’ve been quite busy since I’ve returned from my vacation in England. Busy catching up with work, our Autumnal Equinox Feast, and CIBC’s Run for the Cure to raise money for breast cancer research. But now that’s more or less over, and I’m back!

Upcoming: Pics from my visit to Treadwell’s (I adore this bookshop and Christina’s lovely), my review of Andrieh Vitimus’s Hands-On Chaos Magic (finally), a look at what’s coming in occult publishing (some exciting stuff), and some strange news items that occurred while I’ve been away (humans are weird).

A bientot, kids!

It’s all old hat

By Psyche | August 24, 2009

I posted earlier about attending L’Heure Noir, a series of workshops with Andrieh Vitimus followed by a masquerade. The workshops were a lot of fun, as was the masquerade, but at one point a masked man came up to Andrieh, a little nervously, and said the book was “ok”, but it was “nothing new”. This annoyed me.

I felt it was rude, and responded in kind before electing to remove myself from the conversation. The man quite obviously wanted to speak with Andrieh, and I hadn’t even read the book. It clearly wasn’t my place to argue. I stepped out.

At the time I took it for impolite, but now, having read more of Hands-On Chaos Magic, it also entirely overlooks the purpose for which it was written. Indeed, in the first paragraph of the first chapter Andrieh acknowledges that what’s in here isn’t necessarily unique– that’s not why he wrote the book. Complaining that there’s “nothing new” is misguided for (at least) two reasons.

Point the First: It’s all old hat

Andrieh Vitimus and L’Heure Noir

By Psyche | August 13, 2009

Andrieh VitimusI attended L’Heure Noir on Saturday, an event which featured workshops by Andrieh Vitimus, author of Hands-On Chaos Magic. The event was hosted at the Worker Arts and Heritage Centre, which I was surprised to discover is considered the most haunted building in Hamilton.

A mutual friend had suggested that Andrieh invite me and send his book for review,  and I’m pleased she did. I don’t often get the chance to meet other chaotes outside my usual circles, and was glad to have the opportunity to do so.

The train ride up from Toronto to Hamilton was fraught with adventure, and Hamilton seems to be utterly deprived of coffee houses along James street, but I endured, and eventually had a lot of fun. Continue reading »
